Saint Lawrence, a Christian martyr of the 3rd century, is one of the most venerated saints in the Catholic Church. Born in Rome, he was a deacon and responsible for the Church's property under Pope Sixtus II. In 258, during the persecutions of the Emperor Valerian, Lawrence was arrested and, according to tradition, subjected to atrocious torture. It is said that he was burned on a grill, but he had the strength to joke by saying: "Turn me over, I'm cooked on this side." His bravery and humor in the face of death earned him great fame. Saint Lawrence is the patron saint of cooks and charcoal burners. His feast day is celebrated on August 10.
