Saint Joseph of Leonissa (1556–1612) was an Italian Capuchin priest, known for his austere life and missionary zeal. Born in Leonessa, in the Abruzzo region, he entered the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin at a very young age. He stood out for his ascetic rigor, his love for the poor, and his passionate preaching. In 1587, he was sent on a mission to Constantinople, where he risked his life trying to help enslaved Christians. After being imprisoned by the Ottomans, he returned to Italy and continued to preach tirelessly. He died in the odor of sanctity in 1612 and was canonized by Pope Benedict XIV in 1746. He is venerated as a model of charity, courage, and evangelical faithfulness.
