Saint John Nepomucene was a 14th-century Czech priest, born around 1345 in Pomuk (now Nepomuk), Bohemia. He became vicar general of the Archbishop of Prague and was known for his pastoral zeal. In 1393, he was arrested and tortured on the orders of King Wenceslaus IV, who was in conflict with the Church. According to tradition, John refused to reveal the secret of the queen's confession, which led to his death. He was thrown into the Vltava River and became a martyr of the seal of confession. Canonized in 1729, he is one of the most popular saints in Central Europe. He is often depicted on bridges holding a cross and a star.
