Saint George of Lydda, also known as Saint George, is a 3rd-century Christian martyr venerated by various denominations. Born in Cappadocia (present-day Turkey), he became a soldier in the Roman army under Emperor Diocletian. According to legend, he refused to renounce his Christian faith and was martyred for it, after enduring much torture.
Saint George is most famous for the legend of his defeating a dragon, symbolizing the victory of good over evil. This story has made him a popular patron saint in many countries, including England, Georgia, and Ethiopia. His cult is also associated with the city of Lydda (now Lod in Israel), where a church is dedicated to him.
