Saint Gaetan of Thiene, born in 1480 in Vicenza, Italy, was a reforming priest and co-founder of the Theatine Order. Trained as a lawyer, he gave up a brilliant ecclesiastical career to live a life of poverty, prayer, and service to the sick. Deeply marked by the corruption of the Church in his time, he sought to restore the apostolic fervor of the clergy. In 1524, he founded the Order of Clerics Regular of the Theatines in Rome, with the mission of spiritual renewal and active charity. He was distinguished by his absolute trust in divine Providence, refusing any fixed income for his order. Saint Gaetan died in 1547 in Naples. He was canonized in 1671 and is celebrated on August 7.
