Saint Francis of Assisi (1181/1182-1226) is the founder of the Franciscan order and one of the most beloved saints in Christianity. Born into a wealthy Italian merchant family, he renounced his fortune to lead a life of poverty and prayer. He preached the love of God, universal brotherhood and respect for creation, considering every being as his brother, including animals. He received the stigmata, a sign of his deep union with the suffering Christ. His Canticle of the Creatures reflects his joyful spirituality and his wonder before nature. Canonized in 1228, he is the patron saint of environmentalists. His feast day is celebrated on October 4.
