Saint Fortunatus is venerated as a martyr of the early centuries of Christianity, a faithful witness to the faith during a time of persecution. According to tradition, he came from a noble family and publicly professed his attachment to Christ despite threats. Refusing to sacrifice to pagan idols, he was arrested and condemned to death. His courage before the judges and his endurance under torture inspired many conversions. The memory of his martyrdom was quickly honored by Christian communities, who regarded him as a protector in times of trial. Relics and altars were dedicated to him from antiquity as a sign of veneration. Even today, his name recalls the strength of a faith capable of triumphing over violence and death.
