Saint Catherine of Siena (1347-1380) was one of the most influential mystical figures of medieval Italy. A Dominican tertiary, she is known for her writings and spiritual visions, in which she dedicates herself to the love of God and peace in the Church. She played an important role in the return of the papacy to Rome from Avignon and exhorted the powerful to work for the common good. Her letters and her book, The Dialogue , testify to her intense faith and quest for spiritual reform. Canonized in 1461, she was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1970 and the patron saint of Italy.
