Saint Camillus de Lellis (1550–1614) was an Italian priest known for his devotion to the sick and the poor. Born in Italy, he lived a tumultuous youth marked by gambling and military life, before converting after a profound spiritual experience. Touched by the suffering of the sick, he founded the Order of Camillians , whose mission is to care for patients with compassion, considering each act of care as a sacred service. He introduced the idea that hospitals should be places of love and charity, and not simply places of treatment. His motto, "more heart in these hands" , embodies his humane and empathetic approach to care. Saint Camillus is the patron saint of nurses and hospitals, celebrated for having transformed the standards of hospital care in Europe.
