Saint Apollonia was a 3rd-century Christian martyr venerated for her courage in the face of persecution in Alexandria, Egypt. During a revolt against Christians, she was captured and tortured, her tormentors pulling out her teeth. Rather than renounce her faith, she chose to throw herself into the flames of the stake. Today, she is the patron saint of dentists and people with dental pain, invoked to relieve toothache. Her feast day is celebrated on February 9.
