Saint Anselm of Canterbury (1033–1109) was a theologian, philosopher, and Archbishop of Canterbury , recognized as one of the greatest medieval thinkers. He is famous for his ontological argument , a rational demonstration of the existence of God. A defender of the independence of the Church from royal power, he opposed the kings of England to preserve ecclesiastical authority. His philosophical and theological works, notably the Proslogion and the Monologion , profoundly influenced Christian thought. Canonized in 1494 and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1720, he is venerated as the patron saint of theologians and philosophers . He is often depicted in episcopal robes, holding a book, a symbol of his immense erudition.
