Saint Anne is, according to Christian tradition, the mother of the Virgin Mary and the grandmother of Jesus. Though not mentioned in the canonical Gospels, her name and story come from apocryphal texts, notably the Protoevangelium of James. She is often portrayed as a pious and barren woman until an angel announces that she will bear a daughter blessed among all women. Saint Anne is venerated for her faith, patience, and her role in the divine plan of salvation. Her cult spread early in the East, and later in the West from the early Middle Ages onward. She is the patron saint of mothers, pregnant women, educators, and grandparents. Her feast day is celebrated on July 26.
