Saint Anne, according to Christian tradition, is the mother of the Virgin Mary and the grandmother of Jesus. Her cult, very ancient in the East, developed in the West from the early Middle Ages and experienced great growth in the 15th century. She is often represented in the company of the child Mary, teaching her to read the Scriptures, which makes her a symbol of education and the transmission of faith. As the protector of mothers and families, she is also invoked by pregnant women and grandparents. Her name, which means “grace” in Hebrew, refers to the divine favor granted to a woman who had long been barren. Her liturgical feast is celebrated on July 26, often in connection with that of her husband, Saint Joachim. Venerated throughout Christendom, Saint Anne embodies maternal gentleness and the continuity of generations in faith.
