Saint Aloysius Gonzaga (1568–1591) was a young Italian nobleman who renounced his wealth and title to join the Jesuits. From childhood, he led a life of great piety, marked by prayer, penance, and a fervent love for God. Against his family’s wishes, he entered the Society of Jesus in Rome, where he impressed with his humility and asceticism. During a plague epidemic, he dedicated himself to serving the sick, contracted the illness, and died at the age of 23. He was canonized in 1726 and proclaimed patron saint of Catholic students. He embodies the ideal of purity, sacrifice, and trust in God. His cult is especially strong in Jesuit educational institutions.
