Striking and unusual: this pair of gilt bronze candlesticks from the 19th century features two winged griffins, mythical creatures rich in esoteric and symbolic meaning.
As a fusion of the lion – king of the earth – and the eagle – king of the skies – the griffin embodies the union of opposites: earthly power and spiritual elevation, matter and spirit, instinct and light. In esoteric tradition, it is considered a guardian of hidden treasures, both material and spiritual. Often associated with initiates, it watches over sanctuaries and forgotten knowledge, standing at the threshold between the visible and the unseen.
Each candlestick presents a muscular griffin with outstretched wings, beak open in a silent cry, in an alert and vigilant stance. Its intense gaze and tense posture evoke sacred watchfulness. The detailing of the feathers, claws, and bestial features is remarkably refined – a masterful and inspired casting.
The two light-bearing arms – one rising from the crown of the head, the other from the leaf-shaped tail – support sockets adorned with mascarons. These symbolic flames, held aloft by the griffins, become carriers of inner light, illumination of the mind, in an aesthetic that transcends mere decoration.
Resting on a circular base – a symbol of unity and eternity – this pair of candlesticks combines formal elegance with allegorical strength. Ideal for decorating a cabinet of curiosities, a library, or a meditation room, they will appeal to both lovers of art and seekers of symbolism and hermetic meaning.
