Rare object of ascetic devotion, this monastic discipline consists of a turned wooden handle to which several hemp cords are attached, knotted at regular intervals. Formerly used by religious in their penitential exercises, it served for the practice of voluntary flagellation, in a spirit of mortification and imitation of the Passion of Christ.

The set is in a very good state of preservation, with a beautiful patina on the handle and cords that have remained solid and uniform. An object both spiritual and historical, it bears witness to the practices of piety and rigor proper to monastic life in past centuries.

Rare piece, intended for collectors of religious art, lovers of curiosities and ancient spirituality.

PERIOD : late 19th century

The discipline, a small penitential instrument similar to a whip, is used by members of certain Christian denominations such as Anglicans, Lutherans, and Roman Catholics, within the framework of the spiritual practice known as mortification of the flesh.

Flagellation, an ancient tradition associated with extreme ascetic forms, is adopted by some religious in order to achieve spiritual purification and to mortify their own flesh. This intense form of bodily discipline is considered a way of doing penance to atone for sins. Some believers hold that flagellation strengthens their bond with God and brings them closer to the suffering of Christ. However, it is important to emphasize that this practice is not widespread in all religious traditions and often provokes controversy due to its marginal character.
