Known as "Schandmaskes" in Germany, shame masks were used as a form of humiliating punishment throughout the Middle Ages and into the 18th century. Shame masks were used as instruments of punishment and humiliation, often in conjunction with public punishment. These masks were typically made of metal and were worn by criminals or those who had committed acts deemed shameful. Their design often included elements that could restrict speech or eating. Sometimes, they were accompanied by other forms of corporal punishment. The primary purpose was to deter further crime by setting an example in a cruel and degrading manner.
