Saint Margaret, virgin and martyr, lived in the 3rd century and is one of the most venerated saints of Christian Antiquity. Originally from Antioch of Pisidia, she refused the advances of the pagan prefect Olybrius and chose to remain faithful to Christ. For this firmness, she was cruelly tortured and thrown into prison, where, according to legend, she even triumphed over the assaults of the demon, represented in the form of a dragon. Her courage and unwavering faith made her a model of Christian perseverance. Condemned to death, she received the crown of martyrdom by beheading. Her cult spread in both East and West, and she was long invoked by pregnant women. Her feast is celebrated on July 20.
