Extremely rare 18th-century reliquary containing a relic identified as “De Spongia”, that is to say a fragment of the Holy Sponge of the Passion of Christ.
Presented in a small glazed circular medallion, this reliquary contains at its center a minute fragment set within a delicate arrangement, placed on a red textile background. The whole is framed by a gilt metal decoration forming a stylized ornamental architecture, enhanced by a deep blue background, creating a particularly rich and symbolic visual contrast.
The handwritten inscription “De Spongia”, preserved on its original cartouche, clearly identifies the nature of the relic according to the usages of the Latin tradition.
The Holy Sponge
The Holy Sponge occupies a singular place among the relics of the Passion. According to the Gospels, it was used to present vinegar to the crucified Christ:
“They filled a sponge with vinegar, fixed it on a branch of hyssop, and brought it to his mouth.”
It thus becomes an object directly associated with the final moments of Christ, a material witness to the Crucifixion and to redemptive suffering.
Relics connected to the Passion — and especially those associated with objects that were in direct contact with Christ — have always been considered among the most precious in the Christian tradition. Fragments identified as coming from the Holy Sponge are today particularly uncommon, especially when preserved in antique reliquaries with their original labels.
Presentation and symbolism
The red textile background, typical of this type of arrangement, evokes the blood of Christ and reinforces the sacrificial dimension of the relic. The contrast with the blue background, often associated with the celestial sphere and the Virgin, establishes a visual dialogue between earthly suffering and spiritual elevation.
Despite its modest dimensions, the composition reflects particular care in its presentation, where each element contributes to the enhancement of the sacred fragment, in a subtle balance between aesthetics and meaning.

Relics associated with the Passion of Christ are among the most sought after, yet they do not all present the same degree of rarity. While fragments of the True Cross or relics of saints are relatively well represented, elements linked to the very instruments of the Crucifixion remain extremely scarce.
Among these, fragments attributed to the Holy Sponge occupy a special place. Their presence on the market is particularly rare, far below that of most other relics of the Passion. Antique examples, identified by their original cartouche and preserved in their period reliquary, have today become exceptional.
This reliquary belongs precisely to this very restricted category. It combines antiquity, clear identification, and the nature of a relic of exceptional rarity, making it a piece of the highest order.
A devotional object of remarkable rarity, intended for the most discerning collections.
