The Inquisition, founded in the 12th century by the Catholic Church, aimed to combat heresy and preserve Christian orthodoxy. Initially focused on accusations of heresy, the medieval Inquisition was followed by the Spanish Inquisition in 1478, which focused on maintaining religious unity in Spain. Later, the Roman Inquisition, established in 1542, targeted Protestant heresies. The Inquisition also played a significant role in the persecution of those accused of witchcraft in the 16th and 17th centuries, with trials often involving torture and execution. The Inquisition played a central role in defending the Catholic faith before its abolition in the 19th century.
