DEMONIC HEAD IN CARVED WOOD

Carved from dark wood, this face seems to emerge from the shadows to terrify anyone who dares to look at it. Its pointed horns, fiery hair, monstrous ears, and bulging eyes betray the nature of the demon. The enormous gaping mouth spits out a silent scream or infernal laugh, as if the echo of Hell had been frozen in the material. Its hanging tongue adds to the macabre mockery, recalling the figure of the Evil One who both frightens and mocks mankind.

Around it, vegetal volutes coil and seem to twist like flames or claws framing the diabolical mask. One could believe the entire piece breathes, animated by a malevolent breath, ready to leap out of its frame.

Dating from the 19th century and born of the Romantic rediscovery of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, this wooden demon bears witness to the fascination with the fantastic and the infernal. Both a decorative object and an object of dread, which fully belongs in a cabinet of curiosities, it still speaks today of the power of images: the power to fascinate as much as to disturb.
