Impressive black capirote of a Spanish penitent, known as a Nazarene, bearing the insignia of the Brotherhood of the Holy True Cross of Bilbao
PERIOD: First half of the 20th century
DIMENSIONS: 145 cm x 55 cm
SIZE: 45" x 21.6"
Historically used by flagellants from the Middle Ages onward, the capirote was also present during executions ordered by the Inquisition, where the condemned were forced to wear this hood as a means of public humiliation. This humiliation echoed that of Jesus Christ on His way to Golgotha.
This hood was also worn by flagellants, who—as their name suggests—inflicted punishments upon themselves to atone for their sins. Self-flagellation was one of the most common forms of penance, carried out anonymously thanks to the hidden face.
From the 17th century onward, the brotherhoods of Seville began using it during Holy Week processions, commemorating the Passion of Christ for the remission of humanity’s sins and His subsequent resurrection.
