ref: #RK00-807Elegant candlestick in finely chiseled and gilded bronze, representing a fantastic animal with the body of a quadruped and an upraised head, serving as the support for the candle socket. The curved tail forms a decorative handle. The socket with engraved decoration rests on a flared cup, emphasizing the balance of the composition.
The base, of oval molded form and adorned with stylized scrollwork, enhances the refined aspect of the whole. The underside bears the founder’s mark “R” and the original fittings.
This type of candlestick belongs to the historicist and Neo-Gothic taste of the 19th century, when medieval fantasy and chimerical creatures were highly appreciated in the decorative arts.
