18th Century – Exceptional Piece Made to Order
Impressive antique forged iron grappling hook dating from the 18th century, designed according to a complex three-tier structure and fitted with 19 double hooks, for a total of 38 individually hand-forged hooks. A configuration of truly exceptional scale, with no known equivalent among the usual models of the period.
Each hook features a primary point combined with a secondary barb, forged from the same piece of metal. This clearly intentional technical feature was designed to prevent any disengagement once the hook had taken hold, even in soft or unstable materials. Such a design goes far beyond the requirements of simple object retrieval and indicates a specialized use.
Because of its complexity, the exceptional number of hooks, and the systematic presence of barbs, this grappling hook must be regarded as a professional tool made to order, most likely intended for body recovery operations in an urban or port context during the 18th century. Instruments of this type were used to probe the bottoms of rivers, canals, basins, ponds, or wells, particularly when searching for drowned persons, suicides, or victims of accidents, in situations where ordinary grappling hooks proved ineffective.
The tiered arrangement of the hooks allowed operators to work simultaneously at several depth levels, greatly increasing the chances of securing a hold in muddy or obstructed bottoms. Such sophistication implies the work of a master blacksmith and the existence of a specific commissioner — a municipality, port authority, or specialized service — for whom efficiency outweighed any consideration of cost or manufacturing time.
The whole retains a uniform old patina, intact and unrestored, testifying to its authenticity and real use. At the boundary between utilitarian tool and functional sculpture, this grappling hook possesses a powerful, almost sculptural visual presence that today makes it a major cabinet of curiosities piece, charged with history and material reality.
A rare, dark object deeply rooted in the practices of the 18th century, it stands as a striking testimony to recovery methods, the handling of bodies, and the technical realities of the pre-industrial world.
