Archaeological finds indicate the use of anti-bite collars as early as the Middle Ages. Objects such as metal necklaces with outward-facing spikes or thorns have been found at medieval sites. These collars were usually tied around the necks of domestic animals, especially dogs, to defend them against attacks by wolves. However, scattered evidence suggests that humans may have also worn them, not only to protect themselves from wolves, but also against other supernatural entities.
Although there is not much historical and archaeological evidence, there is enough evidence to suggest that this practice was at least sparse. The need to protect against predators, combined with cultural and superstitious influences, may have motivated some people to adopt these collars.
Perfect for Oddities collection.
