A rare ancient metallic cilice, this piece is specifically one of the so-called thigh or armpit pieces, which do not cause injuries, but do cause marks left by the points of the utensil.

Cilice, a deliberately painful instrument, has been widely adopted in various Christian communities as a means of bodily mortification. Its purpose is to combat temptations and to foster identification with Jesus Christ through the sufferings of his Passion, as well as the spiritual fruits that result from it .
