Saint Bonaventure was a 13th century Franciscan monk and theologian known for his teaching and devotion to the Christian faith. He was born in Italy in 1217 and spent most of his life in the convent of Saint Francis of Assisi.
Bonaventure was a highly educated and cultured man, and he studied philosophy, theology and classics at the University of Bologna. He was also ordained a priest and dedicated his life to teaching and spreading the Christian faith.
In 1257 Bonaventure was elected Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor, a post he held until his death in 1274. During his tenure he worked to reform the Order and bring it back to the spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi.
Bonaventure was also a prolific writer and left numerous works on theology, philosophy and spirituality. He is considered one of the greatest theologians in the history of the Catholic Church and is celebrated annually on July 15.
