It is a religious votive artefact originating from Tyrol or southern Germany, regions marked in the 18th century by a strong penitential culture rooted in post-Tridentine Catholicism.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe piece consists of two skulls carved from wood, positioned back to back and held together by a wrought-iron band passing between the two skullcaps. This fitting extends into an articulated wrought-iron suspension system, formed by long branches joined at their ends by rings. Entirely handcrafted, the iron displays an irregular surface and a substantial oxidation patina consistent with the age of the piece.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe two heads are realistically carved but lack their lower jaws, enhancing the sense of depersonalisation and starkness. They feature hollow eye sockets, gaping nasal cavities and a slightly elongated oval shape, further accentuating their spectral appearance. The surface is covered with a pale ground layer (probably composed of glue and chalk), now heavily crackled, imitating the dry, porous texture of bone. Traces of brown polychromy remain visible within the cavities, deepening the shadows and emphasising the sculptural depth of the features.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eObjects of this kind were often associated with confraternities of penitents, particularly the Black Penitents, who practised rituals of contrition and meditation on death, especially during Holy Week. Suspended in oratories and mortuary chapels, or carried in procession, these heads served as powerful visual instruments intended to remind the faithful of the brevity of life, the necessity of repentance and the inevitability of the Last Judgement.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThis macabre yet devotional pair, at once austere, expressive and rich in theological significance, is a rare testimony to Alpine Baroque spirituality, in which the representation of death was not considered taboo but rather a path towards salvation. It would be equally at home in a collection of sacred art or in a \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/relics.es\/blogs\/relics\/les-cabinets-de-curiosites-tresors-d-un-monde-mysterieux\" title=\"cabinet of curiosities\"\u003ecabinet of curiosities\u003c\/a\u003e.
