Saint Francis began life as a rich and carefree young man, but he gave up everything to follow his faith and live in poverty. He got into the habit of giving everything he had to the poor and of living in the greatest simplicity himself. He began to preach in the streets and in the countryside, attracting many disciples who wanted to follow his example.

He was also a great defender of nature and animals, seeing all creatures as brothers and sisters under divine creation. He is often depicted with animals such as lizards, doves and magnifying glasses.
